I’ll do my best not to make all my posts about Chloë… even though she is pretty damn cute.

Japan Disaster Relief Print Sale

Last year when the Haiti disaster struck I offered prints sales where all of the proceeds went towards the Haiti disaster relief. Well, sadly a year later we have another disaster that needs our hep. I made some print sales from the Haiti print offer so, I’m offering the same deal for the Japan disaster. It’s not much, but anything will help.:

I will be donating 100% of the proceeds from the next ten print sales* from my etsy page to The American Red Cross to help with the Japan disaster relief . Print prices range from $50 – $200 depending on the size of the print, so the larger the print the more money will be going to Japan relief. All prints are individually custom printed by me.

Yeah Yeah Yeah, Nick Zinner

Last weekend I got to photograph Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and a few other bands for Blackbook Magazine. The issue is coming out at the end of March and I while I can’t show those pictures just yet, this was an outtake I did for myself after the shoot. More on these shoots after the issue comes out.

As usual, I’m indecisive of the look. This time I’m not sure if I like the color or b&w version better:

Instagram

As I’ve written here before, I’ve never been big on the iPhone photography apps out there. But I’ll have to admit Instagram has made me change my mind. It’s a fun photography app that not only has all the ultra-hip retro filters the kids seem to like these days but it adds a social component. It’s like a photo based Twitter. I’ve never been one of those people who like to take out their camera/cameraphone everywhere and snap pictures, but with Instagram I find myself doing it a lot more often (much to the dismay of certain people around me).

There are still a lot of limitations to the app… most glaringly the fact that all the photos are low resolution at 612×612 pixles. So good luck making a print if you happen to really like one of your Instagram shots. Also, you can only view user’s profiles and pictures on the iPhone app itself. You can share a link to an individual image but you would only be able to see that single image. I’m hoping these are things they will fix in the future.

But to be clear… I still think we are all going overboard with these faux-retro images. For my money (and unfortunately, it does cost a lot of money) I still prefer the real thing. And I do get a bit annoyed when I really like a shot and have to live with the fact that I wasn’t able to take it with a “real” camera. Somehow I think I’ll have to learn to live with that since carrying an iPhone is a lot easier than a Mamiya RZ67.

Tosca Cafe – San Francisco

Last week I went to Rayko Photo Center to do some large format printing and made a 30″x40″ print of this image of Tosca Cafe in San Francisco. I loved the way it came out so I thought I’d offer a 25% discount on this print in my Etsy shop through the end of February 2011. If you’ve never been to Tosca Cafe you should check it out next time you’re in San Francisco. It’s a great little bar that makes you feel like you’ve been taken back to the 1940′s.

Pier 24 – San Francisco

Although it’s been here for a while, I only recently heard about Pier 24 in San Francisco. It’s an amazing photography gallery right underneath the Bay Bridge. Currently they have work from Edward Weston, Richard Misrach, Man Ray, William Eggleston and many others. It’s free to get in but you must make an appointment. I highly recommend stopping by if you’re in town.

World Cup Fever

Now that the US is out of the world cup I need something to make the rest of the games more exciting. Because when watching the US matches, every minute was really exciting (especially with their tendency to go down a goal early). But now I find that I’m just not that into the games. They’re still fun to watch, but I have nothing vested in them.

So, to make the World Cup a bit more exciting for me I’m going be offering free prints via Twitter to randomly chosen people who retweet about the giveaway and my selected team loses. This should increase my excitement a bit since I don’t particularly want to take the time to make and send out free prints. So, stay tuned to my Twitter feed during select matches and maybe you’ll get a free 5×6 print of one of the images above.

The winner of the first annual 2010 I’m A Photographer And Need Your Approval Photo Contest (aka, The Free Useless Photo Contest) is John Darwin Kurc.

According to John:

“I shot that last week at 0400 in the AM. I was using a Nikon D3 with a Nikon 50mm 1.8 lens. It was with available light (street lamp). The model’s name is Sara and that was her first fine art shoot. The photo was not altered.”

Haiti Disaster Relief Print Sales
