Dr. Wilkinson’s Spa

A few months ago I shot some images of Dr. Wilkinson’s Spa in Calistoga for Viv Magazine.

Dr. Wilkinson’s is a Spa in Calistoga and are known for their mud baths.  The place has a 50′s roadside hotel vibe, which was kinda cool in a retro way, although not what I would typically expect from a swanky Napa spa.  As for the mud bath itself, well, I’ve got to say that when we first walked in before it was prepped, the smell was horrible and I couldn’t imagine anyone paying to do this.  But after being prepped it was a little more palatable.

George Heller – The Most Interesting Man In The Room

Summer is over and I guess it’s time to start posting again.  For some reason I tend to go silent on the blog from July to October.  I’m not exactly sure why since I actually had this post written and ready to go back in June!

Just before summer I headed to Menlo Park to photograph George Heller for Technology Review magazine and I have to say he was one of the most interesting people I’ve ever met.  As a tech geek myself he was particularly interesting because he was involved in the very beginnings of the computer industry.  He was decades ahead of most others when it came to computer graphics and computer education.  But it’s his entire story from surviving the Holocaust to a becoming a student at MIT to his devotion to teaching children that really makes him interesting.  And, at 86 years old he’s still a bit of a bad ass with his weekly climbs to the top of the climbing wall at the Palo Alto YMCA.

Christopher Hitchens

I photographed Christopher Hitchens a while back for the Village Voice.   I just read that Hitchens will be going through chemo therapy for cancer.  Love him or hate him I don’t think you could deny he’s an original and speaks his mind regardless of the trouble it may get him in (read the comments at the linked article and I’m sure you’ll find equal number of people wishing him ill as wishing him well). He’s been one of my most interesting subjects to date and did not disappoint with what I was expecting (among other things, rolling out of bed at noon with a cigarette in hand and a constant flow of cigarettes thereafter).  I hope all goes well with the chemo therapy for Mr. Hitchens.

Still refusing to use one of those fauxlaroid apps that everyone with an iPhone & Facebook account seem to be using… but then again, I only have about 4 more sheets of TZ-Artistic left so I may succumb soon.

World Cup Fever

Now that the US is out of the world cup I need something to make the rest of the games more exciting.  Because when watching the US matches, every minute was really exciting (especially with their tendency to go down a goal early).  But now I find that I’m just not that into the games.  They’re still fun to watch, but I have nothing vested in them.
