A few months ago I was contacted to do a shoot for a new website that was launching soon. The concept was simple enough, follow someone around all day so you can see what a day in their life is like. The someone of course was going to be a musician, actor, artist, or athlete. The website is DITLO (Day In The Life Of). The person I was asked to tag along with was John O’Regan, or as he's better known to his fans, Diamond Rings.
Diamond Rings was in town to play The Fillmore. We started out at Amoeba Music where they played a quick set. After playing he met with and signed autograph with a line of fans. Once we finished at Amoeba we made a quick stop for a burrito and then it was off to The Fillmore. It was a long day but I had a great time hanging out with the band (although I did end up getting food poisoning and being out of commission for the next couple of days).
I always figured I'd hate being a musician and touring. And hanging out with Diamond Rings confirmed that. It was a day of killing time and riding around in a cramped van. They had already been on the road for a while but everyone was still in a great mood and genuinely seemed to enjoy hanging out with each other Honestly, I'd probably want to kill whoever I was with if I was riding around in a van with them all day for months on end. Now that I think of it, I've had some long traveling shoots that felt a bit like going on tour and everyone survived, so I guess being a photographer can sometimes be like being a musician on tour... but with less groupies.
The next night Diamond Rings was scheduled to appear on The Late Show With David Letterman. Being a huge Letterman fan, I was wishing I would have gotten to tag along for that as well. Below are some more images from the shoot along with some outtakes that weren't used on the site. You can see the story and more images on the DITLO website.
